LRQA Asia highlights value of FSSC 22000 certification & Global Market Program dominate agenda at GFSI Food Safety Day – Japan

On the 3rd and 4th October, LRQA attended and presented at the sixth Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) Food Safety Day in Japan, Tokyo.

Each year, various food safety stakeholders from retailers, manufacturers, certification companies, accreditation bodies, academic institutions, and governmental organisations attend the event and each year, the number of participants is rising with over 350 delegates – including representation from Korean conglomerate Lotte - at this years’ event.

The event not only updates participants of the latest progress in GFSI activities, but also informs them on GFSI trends and on local and global best practices concerning food safety.  This year, the event focused on the GFSI-led Global Market Program for small to medium sized organisations serving the food sector across Asia.

Il Hyun from LRQA Korea presented a well-received case study on the value of FSSC 22000 certification (the complete food safety management system certification scheme), which attracted significant levels of interest.  Il Hyun explained; “The case study was based on a Korean-based producer of dried seaweed, with around 30 employees.  They needed to achieve certification to FSSC 22000 in order to comply with the demands of the US-based retailer who wanted to purchase their products.  Since achieving certification in 2012 from LRQA, the organisation is currently anticipating sales growth of 23% during the course of 2013, with 50% of that growth coming from exports.”

LRQA will be holding a food safety webinar on 22 October. Fons Schmid, Chairman FSSC 22000, and Cor Groenveld, Global Head of Food Supply Chain Services at LRQA, share the latest information on FSSC 22000, the GFSI’s Global Markets Program and other new market developments.
