What is Aviation EU-ETS?
This is related to EU legislation, requiring airlines flying in, or into the EU, to report their annual emissions and have their reports verified annually. It is an amendment to the existing EU Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) for land-based installations.
The first formal emission report will cover flights performed in 2010, and has to be verified and submitted before March 2011.
The airlines have been informed already in which EU member state they need to submit their report to the Competent Authority. They also formally need to contract an accredited verifier in this same member state.
LRQA Approach & Services
We aim to contact and contract in particular the major airlines. Our target clients are not only the European companies like Air France, BA etc, but also non-European airlines who want to know well before their formal verification if they are in control.
Airlines formally only have to contract a verifier after 2010, but verification will be very complicated if they have not applied a proper Quality Assurance / Quality Control process for collecting the data. That is why we believe airlines will benefit from a pre-verification prior to actual verification. It will also help top reduce workload at the peak season (January – March 2011) when all airlines require verification.

Recent EU regulations require aircraft operators to monitor and report verified data on CO2 emissions arising from aviation activities on intra-EU flights and all flights entering and departing from EU airports. This EU Regulation (Directive 2008/101/EC) is an amendment to the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS).
LRQA has bundled our expertise at the LRQA Aviation Centre. We are well placed to help you meet your obligations under this legislation. We were part of the consortium working for the European Commission to develop the monitoring, reporting and verification guidelines for aviation’s inclusion within the EU ETS. We already have performed first gap-analyses at major airlines, to help them mitigating the risk of any non-compliance at the moment of final verification.
We can offer you access to our expertise as an accredited verifier under EU-ETS, combined with the knowledge gained from years of experience working with the aviation sector.
