The Aquaculture Stewardship Council’s standards (ASC) are designed to encourage responsible farming by minimising the environmental and social impact of aquaculture.
Developed in line with industry best practice and with input from NGOs, scientists, retailers and producers, the ASC now has nine standards covering 12 species including salmon, trout, shrimp, bivalves and tilapia. Each standard is specific to the species, but all seek to review the management of fish health, environmental impact and social responsibility. As it rapidly becomes a requirement for those supplying fish to larger retailers, ASC certification can bring producers significant commercial benefits.
